About Us

The LYNX: Aboriginal Student Career and Employment Program connects Aboriginal students and alumni of Canadian post-secondary institutions directly with potential employers seeking to recruit qualified Aboriginal employees for internships, co-ops, summer employment and full-time positions.

LYNX offers a Canada-wide online career centre for Aboriginal post-secondary students and alumni, who can browse and apply for job postings catered to suit their needs and level of experience. The LYNX career portal also offers a collection of online career building tools to help students and alumni build quality résumés and explore career interests.

Program History

The LYNX Program was launched by the University of Calgary in October of 2008 with the support of ten corporate sponsors and ten post-secondary partners. The idea of starting an online Aboriginal student employment program surfaced in 2002 due to a noted increase in recruitment activity from large companies seeking direct contact with Aboriginal students.

In 2003, The Native Centre at Career Services met with select members of industry to discuss the need for a program that would assist them in their Aboriginal student / employee recruitment efforts.   This initial meeting proved very insightful, and recommendations from industry representatives included the following:

  • Consult other Post-secondary institutions in Canada
  • Seek partnerships with other Institutions to broaden the Aboriginal student pool
  • Request a three-year commitment, in exchange for recruitment services, from Corporate sponsors  to provide an opportunity to sustainable growth and continuity
  • Establish an advisory committee that includes sponsor representatives to provide ongoing evaluative feedback and guidance.

The above recommendations formed the foundational building blocks for LYNX.
